Matthews Heritage Museum and Matthews Library Launch “Matthews Stories Project” for America’s 250th Anniversary
The Matthews Heritage Museum and the Matthews Library are inviting the community to help preserve local history through the newly launched “Matthews Stories Project: Sharing Our Community’s History,” a community storytelling initiative created in recognition of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.
The project encourages residents, former residents, business owners, students, and anyone connected to Matthews to share personal memories, family stories, experiences, and reflections that help tell the story of the community.
Submitted stories will become part of a growing online community history archive maintained by the Matthews Heritage Museum. Selected submissions may also be featured in future exhibits, publications, presentations, social media, and other public programs.
“We’re excited to partner with the Matthews Library on this meaningful celebration of local history and our nation’s 250th anniversary,” said Bob Aycock, Director of the Matthews Heritage Museum. “While Matthews may be younger than the country itself, the stories of the people who have lived, worked, served, and built our community are an important part of the American story. Our hope is to collect 250 stories for 250 years and preserve these memories for future generations.”
Stories may include:
- Memories of growing up in Matthews
- Family traditions and community events
- School experiences
- Stories connected to local businesses, churches, neighborhoods, and organizations
- Reflections on how Matthews has changed over time
Community members may also submit photographs and documents connected to their stories.
Stories will be collected through the end of 2026.
Please note that submission of a story does not guarantee publication or public use. The Matthews Heritage Museum and Matthews Library reserve the right to determine which stories are featured publicly. Contributors are asked to submit stories and materials appropriate for a public audience.
