Preserving the Stories Set in Stone

Historic cemeteries are more than resting places—they are outdoor museums that tell the story of our community. Each headstone marks a life, a family, and a chapter in Matthews’ history.
The Matthews Historic Cemetery Initiative (MHCI) was established by the Matthews Heritage Museum to help preserve and care for Matthews’ historic cemeteries through education, stewardship, and volunteer service. By protecting these sacred places today, we ensure that future generations can continue to learn from the people who shaped our town.
Our Mission
The Matthews Historic Cemetery Initiative works to preserve the history, dignity, and appearance of Matthews’ historic cemeteries through responsible preservation practices and community involvement.
Our goals include:
- Organizing volunteer headstone cleaning events using preservation-approved methods.
- Coordinating cemetery cleanup days to improve the appearance of historic burial grounds.
- Educating the public about proper cemetery preservation techniques.
- Documenting and sharing the stories of those buried in Matthews’ historic cemeteries.
- Partnering with local organizations, churches, descendants, and preservation groups to protect these important historic resources.
What We Do
Headstone Cleaning
We conduct hands-on volunteer events that teach participants how to safely clean historic gravestones using methods recommended by preservation professionals. Our goal is to remove harmful biological growth while protecting the stone from damage.
Cemetery Cleanups
Working alongside volunteers and community partners, we organize cleanup days to remove litter, clear overgrown vegetation, and improve the overall appearance of historic cemeteries while respecting their historic character.
Education & Research
The Initiative helps visitors discover the people behind the names engraved in stone. Through tours and public programs, we connect Matthews’ cemeteries with the broader story of our community.
Did You Know?
The Matthews Heritage Museum has offered guided tours of the Historic Matthews Cemetery since 2024. The Matthews Historic Cemetery Initiative builds on that work by helping preserve the cemeteries themselves through hands-on stewardship and community engagement.

Preservation Matters
Historic cemeteries are fragile cultural resources. Improper cleaning techniques or well-intentioned repairs can permanently damage historic markers.
The Matthews Historic Cemetery Initiative follows nationally recognized preservation practices and promotes responsible stewardship to ensure these historic sites remain protected for generations to come.
